If you are born before January 1, 1989 or if you are sticking to your SUP when on the water, you aren’t required by law to take the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) Boating Safety Exam. The certification is designed for folks operating motorboats and PWCs (aka Jet Skis) on the Volunteer State’s waterways.

While not required, the Nashville Paddle Co. crew has taken it and we think it is awesome. We share our lakes and rivers (and launch spots) with motorized boats and knowing the right of way and the laws is a good idea.

You can take the class online, but the TWRA Boating Safety Class is being offered this Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016, from 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at the Nashville Boat Show at the Music City Center. Call 615-781-6682 to register. You’ll need to bring a type 600 license (which costs $10). Afterwards, you can stick around and see all the cool boats on display at the show. Show tickets are $12.
